Long Term Alcohol Effects
When you think of college students, you may think of those that are experimenting with just about everything in life so that they can find out who they are. One of the things that some will try is drinking – and some will try binge drinking. The majority of those that try this end up being just fine and enjoy drinking responsibly later in adult life. Others, however, may develop drinking problems. Most stop any binge drinking by the time they are between twenty-five and thirty years of age. Others, however, end up being alcoholics. Those people have to understand the long term alcohol effects that could ruin their health and their lives.
Health problems are some of the most obvious long term alcohol effects. Like smokers, most who drink a lot know they may have problems but they think it will not happen to them or that they have plenty of time to quit before these problems become serious. This is simply not always true. Long term, the liver must rid the body of toxins introduced by alcohol and by normal functions of the body. An overworked liver ends up giving out, ceases to work, or can even develop cancer.
Some people have a personality change when they drink. They can have a few drinks and be fine, but once they work their way up to a six pack or more, they start to turn into someone else. This personality change can be a pleasant one, but it can also be a very bad turn. Some otherwise lovely folks end up abusing their spouses and/or their children when they are drinking. The long term alcohol effects in play here are not only hurting the drinker, but also those that he or she loves. This damage means broken families and broken hearts. The personality change can become permanent.
In the long term, alcohol can end up costing the alcoholic just about everything they once cherished. These long term alcohol effects include loss of job or career, divorce, health problems that become chronic, and only socializing with others that drink to excess. Alcoholics can spend time in jail for DUI, may lose the right to drive, and are more likely to be killed or kill someone else in a motor vehicle accident. Some alcoholics end up losing their children and may be denied access to their grandchildren because they cannot be trusted. Serious alcoholics that never seek help often end up alone and bitter for these reasons.
If you drink a lot, or you love someone that does, think about the long term alcohol effects and what they may be doing to your life right now. Your marriage may be perfect, except for the drinking. This means you will likely divorce because of it if things do not change. Giving up something like drinking is hard, and should be done with care in a treatment facility. That is never fun and never welcome, but it is a must to make things right again.
