Taming PMS Mood Swings

Probably the biggest complaints of those dealing with PMS are mood swings. Sure, there are plenty of ancillary symptoms that are just as prevalent – usually they include acne, bloating, pain and some muscle aches, and even psychological problems – but they all appear to pale when compared to the severity and speed of the mood swings that seem to be out of control during the time just prior to the onset of the menses. Taming PMS mood swings is a mix of putting an end to one of the symptoms that onlookers and others in the household perceive as the main complaint, while at the same time learning how to make the most of available means of dealing with a monthly recurrence.

There are several steps that anyone intent on taming PMS mood swings can take to get them under control. Mind you, success does not follow a mold, but instead requires painstaking trial and error until the woman’s individualized bodily response to hormonal imbalances can be counteracted successfully!

1. Endorphins provide a body with an overall sense of wellbeing. Keeping them high takes the bite out of mood swings and may greatly limit their severity or even curtail their duration. The easiest way of having a steady level of higher endorphins in the blood is via controlled exercise. This is the kind of exercise that is engaged in daily, and which is sufficiently vigorous to lead to an increased heart and perspiration rate for a prolonged, age appropriate period of time. Sure, exercising while dealing with cramps may not be high on the list of things to do while PMS is hitting hard, but in order to get mood swings under manageable control, there is no better way than allowing the endorphins to reach a high level.
2. Easing physical symptoms can help deal with emotional symptoms of PMS. Physical symptoms usually include abdominal cramping, joint pain, muscle aches, and even migraine headaches. A pain reliever specifically formulated for PMS relief, as well as hot baths with aromatic oils put into the water can help to offer soothing relief for the majority of physical PMS symptoms. While they may not guarantee a complete freedom from pain, they most certainly have the power to cut short the pain or at least sufficiently dull it to not aggravate the emotional responses elicited by the flux of the hormones.
3. Building failure into the day prevents depression over slip ups. Although it sounds odd, far too few women allow themselves to make mistakes, fail, or give in to the occasional craving for greasy French fries or a chocolate bar. Although these little slip ups are not the ends of the world, they frequently seem to make such a huge difference in the emotional wellbeing of the PMS sufferer that they may actually set her up for a major mood swing. Rather than allowing this to happen, it is far more preferable to simply plan for the occasional failure and perhaps add another 10 minutes to the exercise regimen than hour of arguments and sore feelings on the other end when mood swings have caused major family arguments.
