Stress Management Techniques
Practically everybody these days needs stress management techniques. We are constantly in challenging, dangerous or just noisy situations that cause anxiety, even if we are not aware of it. Almost every aspect of our daily lives involves us in some kind of stress.
If it is not dealt with in some way, stress can become chronic and cause anxiety, depression or physical illness. Fortunately, it does not have to build up until it results in a breakdown or major disease. We can use stress management techniques to help us to cope with it.
Stress management is the generic name for the whole range of techniques that we have at our disposal to help us deal with stress. Because there are many causes of stress, there are also many different ways of managing it. These may include controlling or stopping the cause, being more assertive in a job or relationship, or even leaving it. There are whole books devoted to this subject, so we will just look a few of the techniques here.
At Work
Workplace stress has two main causes: the work and the people. Work related causes include deadlines, difficult projects that we are not sure we can handle, or a constant feeling of too much work and not enough time. A good time management course can do a great deal to help with all of these. Learning to focus on one thing at a time, setting times when you can be interrupted and times when you cannot, having regular breaks and a definite end to your working day, and keeping a clear desk will all reduce work-related stress.
People problems can include bullying bosses, nasty colleagues, abusive customers, or a general atmosphere of mistrust in the workplace. Assertiveness techniques will help with all of these. Assertiveness training can teach you to set clear boundaries and let people know when they are crossing them. It will also help you see how to be open and strong about your needs or wishes without being aggressive.
At Home
Learning to assert yourself in a way that informs without threatening others is also one of the best ways to deal with stressful relationships at home, whatever their cause may be.
Develop A Positive Attitude
Some people cope with stress in what seems to be a natural way. Often they have a positive attitude that makes them much less prone to anxiety. They know that bad things happen, but they do not let them dominate their lives.
Reducing our anxiety means learning to control our own mind. Many of us grow up believing that our thinking process is out of our control, but this is not true. We can learn to ‘switch off’ fearful fantasies and worries very quickly after they appear, so that we are controlling them instead of letting them control us. Meditation is the best way to learn to do this.
Many people are looking for a magic button that they can press and have their stress go away. Unfortunately there is no such thing. The well known methods are the best and it takes time to get our minds into new habits. However, if you will sincerely give them a try and practice what you are taught, the stress management techniques learned from time management, assertiveness and meditation can make a huge difference in your life.
